Permit rules
QuotaQuota-season reservations are required for overnight wilderness travel at most entry points May 22 - September 26, 2026. Outside the quota season permits are free, self-issued, and not limited by daily quotas.
GroupMaximum party size is 15 people on trail and 12 people off trail, with smaller limits in some areas.
Fees$15 non-refundable reservation fee per permit plus a $5 per-person refundable fee during quota season; park entrance fee also applies.
TransferPermit fees are non-transferable, not valid for future years, and not for resale.
SafetyHigh-elevation Sierra travel with snow-covered passes, stream crossings, and required bear-resistant food storage.
